Eighty senior golfers braved the rainfall on July 4 to participate in the Eleventh “Veterans
Open Competition” run annually by Addington Court Veterans Golf Club, South Croydon to raise funds for a charity nominated by the Club Captain.
The sum raised on the day, augmented by fees levied in connection with Club competitions
each month throughout 2012, will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society in January 2013.
Each year the Club mimics the renowned British Open Championship by offering male golfers aged sixty or more, boasting high or low handicaps, an opportunity to acquire a replica of the world’s most famous golf trophy, the iconic “Claret Jug”.
This year’s programme also featured a “Hole in One” Challenge, sponsored by local car specialists Ancaster, offering an Hyundai car on Hole Number Eight plus prizes on all other Par Threes and an exciting auction that included some spectacular items kindly donated by Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson.

Local knowledge proved decisive in the competition for Roger Boxall, a member of neighbouring Falconwood Golf Club, and David Singh, a home club member, who carried off the cherished trophies awarded to the winners of the Low and High handicap categories.
However, other participants did not leave empty-handed for the Charity Raffle featured a Star Prize in the form of twelve months free golf donated by Crown Golf Limited, the company that operates the Addington Court Golf Centre and a range of prizes donated by various local companies and home club members.
Visitor Gordon Robson (Rusper Golf Club), whose ticket won the star prize, kindly auctioned the Voucher and donated the proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Club captain Derek Hollidge said: “Every year our members are impressed and inspired by the generous support the event receives from so many sources and the enthusiasm of those who participate. Many of this year’s competitors have already expressed interest in next year’s event.”
